In this third of four volumes on the concept of 'life,' the authors analyze racial ideology and genetics as well as the definition of euthanasia in the first half of the 20th century in order to analyze the ideologically conscious history of so-called 'biopolitics'. In addition, they deal with the emerging sociopolitical attempts in the second half of the 20th century to gain control of the purpose in life in times of increasing prosperity and globalization as well as in view of the threat posed by the Cold War. The final section of the book explores current discussions on life in a scholarly context: How is life seen in the sociopolitical discussion on stem cells? How is life regulated by law? What forms of life are covered by molecular biology? And how is life seen in the context of nanobionics, hybrids and biofacts, constructions of life in the post-genomic era and in the neurosciences?
